Evidence of their time in the desert includes hundreds of archeological sites and over 40,000 inscriptions, rock paintings & petroglyphs (pictures of people and animals lightly carved into stone). Some inscriptions have been used to help explain the development of the early alphabet.

In the West, Wadi Rum may be best known for its connection with British officer T. E. Lawrence, who based his operations here during the Arab Revolt of 1917–18.
